Hi Jane, Gillian On 06/01/16, at 10:47 AM, Larry Jane and Robert, Larry On 04/20/16, at 10:06 AM, Patricia Thank you for your condolences. You and Robert are the only breeders I want to go to, so I would like to be placed on the waiting list. The only other thing I would consider is adopting an adult poodle who needs a home, if you know of any. I adopted Bonnie from Maine Poodle Rescue through Nancy Graham, and it made me feel very good to give her a happy life, if only for 5 years.(She had spent her 1st two years in a kennel and then shelter and then with an older woman who had to give her up.) I will look into rescuing, and will ask Nancy, but only for the next couple of weeks.
Please let me know if I need to send you a deposit at this time.
Best regards, Patricia On 09/11/14, at 03:54 PM, Carlene
Hi Jane,
All is well with Harry. He is eating so much better these past two weeks. He finishes everything but not always at one time. He seems to really like to eat with us at dinnertime when he always finishes his food, which makes me feel so much better. He is also playing with all the toys we had for Jesse. Sometimes he has 40 toys out on the floor and plays for 2 hours at a time, throwing them, growling and baking at them, really enjoying himself. I think he is very happy with us as we are with him. He has been a real joy in our life. He has been having play dates with a 6 year old red English lab. They have so much fun together. Loves all our friends.
Today, he had his first grooming. I told the groomer to follow your cut exactly. He looks good but not like your grooming. I prefer a little more casual look for him. Can you tell me what blades that you used on him so at his next grooming I can tell her. I think his body is a little too short right now and I like his top knot a little longer over his eyes. He is so beautiful, it really doesn’t matter.
Next Friday, he is going to be neutered. I hope his temperament will not change. He is the most precious, loving, sweet dog I have ever known. Whenever I am out of the house or have been away from him for a short time, he rushes right over to me and puts both feet on my lap, his head either on my lap, chest, or under my arm. It is a great feeling to have his trust and love...
Hope all is well with you and Robert and all the gang. Has Jesse found a home yet?
Carlene On 06/22/15, at 12:48 PM, Cheryl Good morning! I am sick today and Mosely is sitting in bed with me playing with his squeak toy. Our house feels whole again and he is such a buddy to both Tom and me. Mosely is very calm in the house but he loves to run and play when we take him to a few places where he can run off leash. I’ve taken 2 puppy training classes and he’s done very well. He’s learned to walk on the leash quite well (except when other dogs or people pass by-‐he wants to play!) and we walk a few times every day. He has a couple of “friends” and loves to run in their yards with them. His best friend is Pippin, a miniature poodle, because Pippin runs like the wind and is fearless. My students love him, as do all those who meet him, and he is really beautiful. He is a rich brown and his coat is beautiful. On July 5 we are going to Vermont for my niece’s wedding, and we will be hiking with Mosely and Tom’s brother’s dog, Colby. I think Mosely will like hiking but I do want to be careful not to overdo it since Mosely is s[ll a pup. Do you have any suggestions as to stamina or any thoughts you have? He just got his rabies shot and will get the second limes shot this week so he is up to date on everything un[l we have him neutered in August or September. Mosely is so sweet and loving, we couldn’t ask for a better dog. He is smart and easy to train, no housebreaking problems. He does love to chew so I’m always looking for safer things, but he does prefer leather shoes! I s[ll have rooms gated off so Mosely has the run of the house. We have a large, contained deck, and he loves to hang out there and watch the wildlife. Thank you for breeding such great dogs! Mosely is looking at me now and his eyes seem to say, “can we go out now?” He is being very patient with my illness today. As I said, we couldn’t have a better dog.
Cheryl On 04/17/15, at 05:02 PM, Niles As Ransom rounds out his first 48 hours here, I had to write and
compliment you both on the wonderful poodles you breed and raise.
I cannot imagine a puppy having a better temperament, and I have to keep
reminding myself he's not quite 4 months old. He walks perfectly (better
than my grown dog!) on leash. When he encounters a strange sound - and
I have the feeling so many sounds here in the city are strange) - he is
initially startled, but he doesn't stay scared and then wants to go
investigate. He wants to meet every human we go by, but not in an
annoying, spastic kind of way. He just stands patiently and waits or even
sits down. He's loving and cuddly, but confident and not needy. And he
took to Toby and the cat immediately.
He is really about the most perfect dog I've ever met.
A couple times I've come home and found him barking in his (large) crate.
Jenny has been out of town this week, so I imagine he gets a little
separation anxiety when the only person he knows here is gone. I followed
the advice in one of Ian Dunbar's books ("Before and After Getting Your
Puppy" is excellent). When I put him in the crate, instead of just putting him
in there with chew toys, etc., I sit on the floor and gently say, "Ransom,
settle. Settle..." and talk to him softly and pet him until he calms down,
which takes maybe 5 minutes. That seems to have solved the problem.
Dunbar says one of the best things a dog owner can do is teach his puppy
to settle, and I'm happy with the results thus far.
I just wanted to thank you again for your efforts. I was (and remain) sad
about Victoria Law's death because Toby is a great friend and has brought
me so much joy, but I'm happy to know that people like you are doing such
great work. Please let me know if I can ever serve as a reference or
anything.
I've been trying to work from home this week to help Ransom get
acclimated, but as you'll see from the attached pics he does not make me
very productive.
Niles On 02/04/15, at 5:31 PM, Jill Hi Jane,
I hope you're doing well and that you're enjoying a nice winter. It's snowing like crazy here, at least 16-18
inches and Zephyr is in heaven! I just wanted to let you know that he had his first kennel stay last week.
Dwight and I went to Florida for 10 days and Zephyr went to our favorite kennel for the duration. The
kennel owners loved him! I would call from Florida to make sure he was OK, and they said: "We can tell
that he's really well-adjusted," "he's eating and sleeping well", "he's such a good-looking poodle" (they
never said that about our others), "he's such a gentleman", "he's playful, friendly, and happy" "he's a
wonderful dog and we loved having him"! In 25 years with them, I've never had them praise one of our
dogs like that.
They didn't even realize that he hasn't been neutered yet. He's scheduled for that at the beginning of April,
much to everyone's amazement. Apparently, 5 months is the norm around here for neutering. We haven't
been in a rush, and we remember you stressing that we should hold off until he's at least 9 months.
Anyway, all is well here, I hope all of his brothers and sisters are doing well too, Zephyr is such a treasure!!! Take care, Jill On 01/08/15, at 11:14 AM, Janie On 11/06/14, at 9:13 AM, Jill Hi Jane, I have been meaning to update you on Zephyr, especially since our older daughter Amanda met him a couple of weeks ago for the first time! It was love at first sight!! Having him in our family has made daily life so much more fun and has made family visits more lively and loving. He is the most cuddly dog who loves all of us. I thoroughly enjoy taking him for walks because he is so outgoing and confident. Our other poodles were more timid about strangers and other dogs, but with Zephyr, whenever someone says "Can my dog say hi to your dog?", I can always say, "Yes!" He greets dogs cautiously but fearlessly, he's confident but respectful of strange dogs and absolutely over the moon with happiness when we run into dogs he's met before. He is fascinated by everything new, the different leaf blowing machines, tree removal trucks, garbage trucks, any noisy truck or car, people etc: he will stop in his tracks, sit, and observe the person or truck/bus until he's figured it out. Then we move on. We just finished a 7 week "puppy kindergarten" class which he LOVED. He'd see me pack the bag with training treats etc and would be dancing by the back door ready to go. Out of 10 puppies, he was by far the most active, playful, and easily bored. He'd race around playing for the first 15 minutes with the other dogs, some of whom really loved the running and wrestling. As rough as he plays, none of the puppies ever barked or cried out when he was roughhousing. Which was odd, because they would cry out with other dogs. Perhaps dogs sense something besides the physical, and Zephyr is all play without a mean bone in his body. He was also, tough to handle in some classes with lots of barking and some nipping (teething issues???) and as I watched the other people with their more docile or timid dogs, I'd wish there'd be less talking and more in-class training because he loved that. Anyway, our last class was Tuesday evening and the big event was a timed obedience course. Guess who won? Yep, Zephyr! by a wide margin. He loved running around, sitting, standing, waiting, lying down, and racing to me on the recall! I think people were shocked. They thought he was just a big knucklehead! We have started a pre-agility training class, because I can tell that he loves a challenge and he's so quick to learn basic obedience, I'm sure he'll eventually love tunnels, A-frames, jumps etc. The house breaking has gone very well, he doesn't have the run of the house yet, but as long as he's not alone, he can go anywhere in the house. He's still crated when I leave and at night, but I think we can move him to a bed in the next month or so. When do you let your dogs have the run of the house? Is it the house breaking or the chewing that determines their freedom? I can't really remember. How's Jesse doing? Do you still have him or did you find a new home for him? If he's like Zephyr, I know he must be a sweetheart. I'll try to send you some photos from my phone. I'm leaving tomorrow for a week to visit Amanda and Emily and my mother. I am sorry to leave him again, but Dwight is happy for the excuse to come home early and loves taking care of him, so perhaps a bit more Dad-bonding is good!! I hope all is well in Gastonia, Take care, Jill On 10/28/14, at 9:36 AM, Carlene Dunne Hi Jane, I thought I would drop an email to you. Harry is at the groomers and hopefully he will look as beautiful as he was when you groomed him. Sunday evening, my cousin was over for dinner with her new 5‐year old black afghan. Harry was so excited to see them (especially the dog). When it was time to give the dogs their dinner, Harry gulped his down as soon as it hit the floor, barely came up for air. I guess he was not going to let that other dog take any of his food. He has never eaten like that before. He is now back to his leisurely dining (but does finish everything). Harry has been a pure delight to both Rod and I—we love him so much; and I know he is as happy as can be. The only time I have ever heard him growl is when he is playing with his toys—he throws them, growls/barks at them—for hours at a time. He is such a delight! How have you, Robert, and all the dogs been? Any news as far as a new litter is concerned? You must have a lot more free time with all the puppies gone. We think of you often and your hospitality to us during our visit. Regards to Robert... Carlene On 9/10/14, at 7:53 AM, Gillian Hi Jane, I wanted to let you know that you were so right about how Zephyr would fare in my absence last week. He was absolutely fine, Dwight and he bonded even more firmly, and I received a HUGE welcome home! He is an amazing puppy. He lets us know when he wants to go out, he will roll his bowl around if he's still hungry, and he is terrific with baths and being groomed. He 's playful, full of beans, and super curious, yet retains a bit of dignity and elegance. I'm totally serious about that, he is also incredibly cuddly (and nippy) which is just what you promised. He also seems to be displaying his inner watchdog and protector much earlier than our females ever did. Oh, and I took him for his first solo car ride ( when Emily was here she would sit with him while I drove) and he was terrific. I just think he must be incredibly smart!! At the end of August, he weighed in at 16.6 pounds, so he's growing like a weed. How is Jesse doing? If you have any developmental or training advice, I'd love it. I will say Zephyr will sit before getting his leash on or off, he's learned to "wait" until I tell him it's OK to go outside, he knows to lie down when I tell him "down" , and I'm working on sit-stay (that's pretty tough). I haven't started "heel" because I'm just letting him have fun exploring on our walks. Anyway, I will never tire of thanking you for this amazing puppy, he has already become an integral member of our family and I'm loving every step of the training and growing up way!!! I hope all is well with you and Robert, Take care, Jill On Feb 24, 2014, at 10:37 AM, Carole Merrill
With pleasure, Louisa. Jane’s dogs are as special as Jane is herself. You could not be in better hands.
Here is my story- way more than you need to know, My husband, Peter and I own Henry (actually, Henry owns us!) bred by Jane and Robert Demes. Henry is a beautiful, black, sweet-tempered 13 month old standard. He is our second standard poodle. His predecessor, Daisy, was a lovely brown. She died very suddenly 2 years ago of a bizarre cancer at 111/2. We were devastated. Once the shock wore off,the loneliness of life without a poodle settled in. I started the search for another brown girl. Daisy was bred here in Maine by one of the most respected couples in the poodle world - also one of the few breeders of brown standards. They are quite old now and had no immediate plans to breed when I called asking for a puppy. Without hesitation and with the highest praise, they referred me to Saratoga Standards and Jane. They had successfully bred their female to my Henry’s father on several occasions. I contacted Jane and we began a regular correspondence. She helped me recover from the terrible grief of losing Daisy and after the puppies were about 6 weeks old and began to develop personalities, she - very gently - suggested that I might want to consider the little black boy she had grown to adore. From the day they were born, Jane sent pictures. We planned to choose our puppy in person but we continued to be fixated on the one brown girl in the litter. We even named her.
The rest is history. We flew to Gastonia to meet Jane and Robert and the puppies. When we held the little brown girl, it suddenly became clear that we were trying to “replace” Daisy, and cute as that puppy was, she didn't speak to us. Little Henry, Jane’s favorite and her secret choice for us, snuggled right up to Peter. A month later we picked him up and drove back to Maine. Jane and Robert breed wonderful dogs. We know the whole crew. It’s special when you have the opportunity to meet both parents of your puppy.
We love Henry’s father so much that he has his name. Henry's mother is lovely, sweet and gentle. The dogs match all the breed standard characteristics: beautiful heads, square bodies, great ears and tails, but it is their temperament that sets them apart. Jane and Robert know what they’re doing! Perhaps you have owned poodles before. If not, you are in for a great experience. I advise you not do as we did and keep an open mind about color and gender. I never thought I'd want a boy dog. But now that Henry is in our life, we understand what all the vets and breeders say: boy dogs are sweeter and more affectionate. They need you more. I’ve never gotten the hang of taking good pictures with my phone or I’d send one. Henry will be groomed on Wednesday. I’ll see if I can get a decent shot and send it to you.
Good luck, Louisa, and have fun!
Carole
Friday, September 13, 2013 11:22:57 AM Eastern Daylight Time Subject: Wilfred Hi Robert, Sorry it's been so long since I have sent you an update on Wilfred, but I want to say that he is one of the most amazing dogs I know. He is handsome, intelligent and loyal. Personal he is more than I ever could have asked for. Thank you, Noah Hillis On 7/14/13 9:12 AM, "Monica Cain" <statelytreasuresbystar@gmail.com> wrote: Jane, Dixie did do something funny several weeks ago. Sam went to pick up a young lady to take to a church function at the White Water Center. He barely knew Christine but was being a kind gentleman. She happens to live in the finest house in Belmont. Sam and Dixie drive through the gate and get out of the truck with Dixie right on his heel. The family is sitting around the pool and Dixie spies the water and decides to jump in for a quick dip. I guess she saw a great opportunity and took advantage of it. What a girl!!! I just wanted to say thank you for this wonderful member of our family. She is not a dog or a Dog, she is a DOG!!!!! I either want a clone of Dixie for my own or I would like to get a black female from your next litter. So keep me posted on when you may have puppies again. I do believe that Bill and I will be moving out of state but Sam (and Dixie) will be remaining here. In other words, if you need any help while Robert is gone, just call Boy and DOG! Fondly,
A brief lapse of time there, Jane, but I've been a little busy lately. Barney is doing beautifully, has gained 14 pounds since being with us, and eagerly participates in "training sessions", side-by-side with Bailey. Bailey is a great example and it is real precious to have them go through the sit, shake, lie down, stay, etc. routines together. I discovered some wonderful training treats recently - Natural Balance Tillman's Training Tips. No grains, just meat and vegetables, small bites, that can be broken into tiny bites so as not to overfeed the boys. Either Barney is a "quick study" or you were already working on training before we got him. He is so eager to please and get ahold of the treat. What a clown!!! Barney would eat anything placed before him. He is currently dining 3 times daily on Innova Large Breed Puppy food, 2 5-oz. cans of Innova puppy food, and gets about 2 ounces of fresh cooked chicken a day after finishing everything else. I just love response like this - makes roasting all those chickens so worthwhile. A question for you: With all your experience with these beautiful standard poodles, at what age do you transition the older pups to adult food? I'm not quite sure when to do this and can't remember just when I went through the change with Bailey. I'm considering getting both pups onto Canidae ALS (All Life Stages) food when I can take Barney off the puppy food, although Canidae says their ALS is suitable for young puppies too. Any advice please? Our favorite groomer here in Warrenton fell in love with Barney. Apparently he was a good boy for her throughout the whole treatment. Oh, he was so handsome with his new poodle doo. Tammy was able to get most of that wirey hair off him and now he is so soft and evidence of brown hair is scarce in the house. I was getting tired of having to vacuum so often! Barney and Bailey go hand-in-hand with most activities. In fact, with Barney's seperation anxiety symptoms, he is happy as long as he can see Bailey, eat near him, sleep in the same room with him, etc. Bailey is a great help with Barney and just sitting around and watching them play tug-o-war and tease each other is an amusing event. We're loving this experience with these "kids". They love their auto rides and do real well riding together (I was afraid that they would engage in rough playing in the car, like they do at times in the house, and create a distraction). Seems that the sight-seeing is enough distraction for them to keep them in line. We have many photos of Barney now, some of which don't show him up real well because he is such a dark chocolate color. Enjoy these three. Jane, if you think of any advice you can offer, or just want to check on things from time to time, don't hesitate to get in touch. Tom and I would love to hear from you. Smile. Connie Ford Hello! We are all doing wonderfully thank you! Wilson is an excellent boy! He is such a fast learner! He just finished with his puppy shots, and is in very good health according to our vet. He is teething, baby teeth are falling out, and we are going thru rawhide like it is going out of style lol. He is so lovable and cuddles with us every night before bed on the couch. He loves playing fetch and catch, he jumps like a kangaroo, and runs like the wind! Jim and Wilson will start puppy training classes next week and both are eager learners. I attached a picture it is from a few days after the new year with the pets in front of the chirstmas tree. Very truly yours, Cindy and Jim Hi Jane Just writing to give you an update on Wyndi. She has only been here for a week, but it seems like she has always been here she fits in so well. She is so awesome! Everything we were looking for. She loves to play and prance around (so cute) and no matter how cold it is outside she loves it out there. She goes to the door when she wants to go out. We have a doggie door for her but she hasn't got it figured out yet she paws at it, but she doesn't push ,if we see her at it we open it and give her a little push. I bet by Sunday or Monday she will be going thru on her own. She is eating very good she weighs 13.6# We took her to the vet for a puppy check up the vet loved her color and her coat said she is doing great She felt the place where the tick was and she didn't seem to be worried about she said we would watch it. She did want me to ask you about any tick medication you used on her and when the last time was and she wants to do a heart worm test on her when she is 6 months old. I'll send you some pictures soon Penny Robert and Jane - I am on my way to the post office as soon as I finish this email. My fingers are flying across the keys as I am so excited I can hardly stand it. I spoke with Anne Bell this morning and we have a Brown Girl - she is 3 weeks old - finally, at last, after 15 months of searching. Dance was at Salisbury last April and so were we. I can't believe we were so close to her. So, thanks to you both, we have our new little brown girl. We sifted through over 300 websites, were on two lists with dams that never got pregnant, waited for two births that produced no brown girls. But, it's over now. We will have a special Christmas and our retirement will be filled with puppyhood. Anne is working out some details, but I am confident that all of you together have given us a healthy, beautiful standard. Dear Jane and Robert~ From: Paul Bryan With a pocketful of treats, a bottle of water, and some baggies, Gus and I set out to the neighborhood park early this AM for some leash training. I thought I was going to have to coax him to follow me, as previous dogs I have known have resisted the leash.

I couldn't be happier. He is so easy. So smart, so eager to please. We went to the vet on Monday. Everything is great. He got his worming medicine. Just wondering if you ever noticed softer stooles after a vaccine? He's had that but the vet says he may have eaten grass. He also got his heartworm and flea and tick medicine. Teddy and Roxy are getting along great. Buddies. She follows him everywhere. I'm history. They take turns humping each other. Then they both try humping Claudia. Roxy's behavior has even improved since he's been here. We had the invisible fence installed Monday. After the second 10 minute training session Teddy was already jumping back when he heard the audio warning. I didn't even have to pull him back. By wednesday they said he'll be ready for off leash. They did introduce him to the shock today and were very impressed at how well he's doing. Roxy on the other hand is a bit slower to catch on. Or should I say alot slower. I did get my new clipper today. I got the Oster A5 Turbo. Speaking of grooming. After so much rolling around in the dirt I did give Teddy a bath this week. He was great. He was great about the blow dryer too. Teddy now stands taller than Roxy. I've attached a photo. Jodi |
